Overnight Birding Adventure

An overnight birding trip to Tambunan and Gunung Alab delivers a concentrated taste of Borneo’s avifauna: after settling in, you rise pre-dawn to visit the quiet bird hides at both Tambunan and the Gunung Alab observatory, where mist-lit clearings and fan-shaped leaves reveal spectacular early-morning sightings such as the endemic Whitehead’s broadbill, the striking Bornean bristlehead, and the elusive Mountain serpent-eagle; hornbills—Great and Wrinkled—often call from the canopy, while flocks of Fruiteaters and colorful barbets feed busily at fruiting trees. In the afternoon, roadside stakeouts and mixed-species flock searches along mossy, moss-fringed roadsides produce more rarities and endemics: the Bornean leafbird, Black-and-crimson Oriole, Blue-headed Pitta (when present), and localized montane species like the Everett’s thrush and the Bornean stubtail. Between the hides’ still, intimate viewing and the dynamic roadside forays, the trip frequently yields lifetime birds and excellent photographic opportunities for both endemic and regionally rare species.
