Kiau Homestay
Kiau Village, nestled on the flanks of Mount Kinabalu in Sabah, Malaysia, is a charming Dusun settlement where dramatic mountain views meet warm, living tradition; visitors can hike a variety of trails from gentle village loops to challenging ridge treks that thread through verdant rice terraces, mossy forest and orchid-rich clearings, guided by locals who point out medicinal plants and birdlife. Village activities include hands-on experiences such as planting or harvesting rice (season permitting), learning traditional bamboo and rattan weaving, trying out native carpentry techniques, and joining communal storytelling and music sessions featuring the sompoton (bamboo mouth organ). The culture in Kiau is distinctive for its Dusun ethos of communal reciprocity, close ties to the land and reverence for ancestral customs, visible in colorful handwoven garments and seasonal rituals. Culinary offerings reflect mountain-grown ingredients and time-honored recipes: taste hinava-style raw marinated fish, bamboo-cooked rice and wild vegetable stews, plus sweet kuih made from glutinous rice and palm sugar, all prepared with flavors rooted in local produce and passed down through generations.
